Privacy Policy

1. Information We Collect

Account information. If you create an account, we collect your email address and a hashed password through Supabase, our authentication provider. We do not store plaintext passwords.

Study progress. For logged-in users, we store which questions you have marked as mastered. Guest progress is stored only in your browser's localStorage and is never sent to our servers.

Payment information. Premium purchases are processed by Stripe. We never receive, store, or have access to your credit card number, expiration date, or CVV. Stripe provides us only with a session confirmation and your email. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy.

Usage data. We collect anonymized information about how visitors use the site (pages visited, time on page, general location by country) through standard server logs. This data is not linked to your identity.

Advertising data. We display Google AdSense advertisements to free users. Google may use cookies and similar technologies to show you personalized ads based on your browsing history. See Section 3 for more information and how to opt out.

2. How We Use Your Information

• To create and manage your account
• To sync your study progress across devices (logged-in users only)
• To process your premium purchase and unlock paid features
• To send account-related emails (email verification, password reset)
• To improve site content and user experience using aggregated usage data
• To display advertisements to non-premium users via Google AdSense

We do not use your data for any other purpose, and we do not sell it to third parties.

3. Google AdSense and Advertising

CivicsPrep uses Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google and its partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting google.com/settings/ads or aboutads.info.

Premium users who have purchased a CivicsPrep subscription do not see AdSense advertisements.

4. Cookies and Local Storage

• Authentication cookies: Supabase sets a session cookie when you log in. It is required for your account to function and is deleted when you sign out.
• Study progress (localStorage): Guest users' question mastery data is stored in localStorage only — it stays in your browser and is never transmitted.
• Advertising cookies: Google AdSense may set third-party cookies for ad targeting. You may block or delete these through your browser settings.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

We retain account data for as long as your account exists. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by emailing us at hello@civicsprep.com. We will delete your data within 30 days.

Guest data stored in localStorage is never transmitted to our servers and can be cleared at any time through your browser settings.

6. Data Security

Passwords are hashed and never stored in plaintext. All data transmission occurs over HTTPS. Supabase stores data in SOC 2-compliant infrastructure. We apply row-level security policies so users can only access their own data.

No method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. While we take reasonable precautions, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Children's Privacy

CivicsPrep is intended for adults preparing for the U.S. naturalization process. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of CivicsPrep after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
